Shredded prints glued to masonite cut hexagons, tied together with hemp twine, covered with beeswax and tree resin for preservation. The idea was to document a photo-a-day. Each photo was shredded and photographed before and afterwards. Then the shredded pieces were glued randomly to a 6″ masonite hexagon. Each hexagon had a line of Yeats poetry embedded in the shredded photos. The entire piece consisted of 132 hexagons each tied together with hemp string and attached at the top to a walking stick. This piece was created during my third semester of grad school and with advisor Geoff Halber. I was very inspired by British artist Simon Starlings work.
“I’ve always tried to find ways to use, you know, very outmoded, outdated kinds of technologies and conversations and ideas and try to give them some new life in relation to a contemporary understanding.” — Simon Starling
